The Singapore Convention on Mediation now counts nearly 60 signatories, 13 of which are full parties, including Japan, Singapore, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Nigeria, Ecuador, Honduras and Uruguay. While the world awaits the ratification of the Convention by China, India, South Korea, and the US which have already signed, this session takes a look at the creative uses of mediation, particularly in cross-border disputes, and the inter-institutional arrangements available in alternative dispute resolution in countries like Turkiye, Singapore, and China for global enforcement.
These are mixed-mode options available in Asia combining Mediation-Arbitration or Arbitration-Mediation-Arbitration. Between Singapore and Turkiye, there is co-mediation available. Finally, mediation advocacy best practices and tips for those who act as legal advisors during a mediation – how to prepare oneself and one's client for a mediation – in order to achieve the best possible outcome.

Bahadir Özbayrak
President of Foreign Affairs at TOBBUYUMBahadır ÖZBAYRAK graduated from Ankara University Faculty of Law (1993) and worked as a civil servant at the Presidency of the Republic of Türkiye until 2020. Following his graduation, he completed his academic studies in the field of Private International Law and his studies at the Banking and Commercial Law Research Institute. During his internship at the Ankara Bar Association, he also served as a member of the Foreign Relations Commission. After his retirement, he passed the Mediation Examination of the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Türkiye and received the title of 'expert mediator' with the subsequent trainings. He is currently serving as the Chairman of TOBBUYUM (The Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges of Türkiye UYUM Mediation and Dispute Resolution Center) Foreign Affairs Commission.

He is an experienced lawyer of more than 30 years, working out of Beijing, Hong Kong, Sydney and Singapore. Prior to joining SIMC, he served as General Counsel of IBM Greater China and Nortel Networks Asia Pacific for about 20 years.
Wee Meng has advised senior leadership of MNCs as lead counsel on legal and regulatory issues arising out of doing business in Greater China, India, Japan, Korea, ASEAN, Australia and New Zealand. As an active board member of US-China JVs, he has managed a wide range of emerging market risks with leading international best practices.
Leveraging his deep regional experience, Wee Meng is currently leading SIMC to promote mediation to resolve complex, commercial cross-border disputes in the Asia Pacific region. He has trained Judges, Senior Lawyers and Businesses across Asia in international mediation trainings and workshops.
Wee Meng is an accredited mediator of the Singapore International Mediation Institute. He graduated with a law degree from the National University of Singapore and holds a Master of Laws from the University of Hong Kong. He is called to the Singapore Bar and Hong Kong’s Roll of Solicitors.

General Manager at TOBBUYUMOnur Yüksel attended and successfully completed the 10-month Global Commercial Disputes Certificate Program at Northeastern University in Boston, USA in 2009. He completed his master's degree in International Relations at Northeastern University with his thesis research on 'Disputes of Oil Companies in the Middle East' and specialized in commercial disputes. During this period, he took courses on 'Trade and Energy Disputes in the Middle East' at the Department of International Relations at Middle East Technical University and conducted research on the same topic. He continued his studies at Nova Southeastern University with a Master's and PhD in Dispute Analysis and Resolution, during which time he received a Research Assistant Fellowship from the same university for 3.5 years and completed his master's and PhD courses. He completed as an honor student with a 4.00 GPA. He completed his doctoral dissertation on 'The Effects of Negotiation Factors in the Mergers and Acquisitions Process'. After his studies, he was invited as an honorary member of the Phi Kappa Phi organization, which was founded in 1897 in the USA and is selected among the best alumni and scientists and serves them.
He worked for 1.5 years in the research project "Disputes and Ombudsman in State
Organs" conducted by the US Federal Government at the White House. He worked at COI
Group for 6 months on mediation. He worked Katz & Associates for 3 years as a research
assistant on mediation and negotiation. In 2017, he established a project partnership with the Harvard Negotiation Program department. In 2018, he participated in the Harvard Negotiation Program held in Dubai.
Since 2019, he has been working as the General Manager of the Union of Chambers and
Commodity Exchanges of Türkiye UYUM Mediation and Dispute Resolution Center.
