As international borders reopen and cross-border travel resumes, SIMC is pleased to offer the 2nd edition of its Japan Specialist Mediator Workshop on March 18-19 (Sat-Sun), 2023 at xxxx, Tokyo. This by-invitation only workshop, led by Professor Joel Lee, Chairman of the Singapore International Mediation Institute (SIMI), is now open for registration.

Together with the guidance and direction of co-trainers Mr. Lok Vi Ming, Deputy Chairman of SIMC, and Mr. Chuan Wee Meng, CEO of SIMC, participants will gain an appreciation of different dispute resolution paradigms and understand the fundamentals of interest-based dispute resolution.

Through case studies and active participation in role plays, they will acquire a pragmatic approach to problem-solving and communication management to develop their mediation skills.

Joel Lee is a Professor at the Faculty of Law, the National University of Singapore. Joel co-pioneered the teaching of Negotiation and Mediation in the Singapore Universities and has played a significant role in furthering the development of mediation in Singapore, not just in education but in practice. A graduate of Victoria University of Wellington and Harvard Law Schools, Joel is a partner with CMP-Cambridge (USA), and a principal mediator with and the Training Director of the Singapore Mediation Centre.

Joel was a member of the International Mediation Institute’s Independent Standards Commission and Intercultural Taskforce and was also a key member of the Ministry of Law’s Working Group on International Commercial Mediation. Joel is presently the founding Chair of the Board of the SIMI. He is also a Certified Trainer of Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP).

Joel has taught overseas at the University of Copenhagen (Denmark), University of Law, Economics and Science of Aix-Marseille (Aix-en-Provence France) and Anglia Law School (UK) and is the co-editor and co-author of the book An Asian Perspective on Mediation and the Singapore Mediation Handbook, and the General Editor for the Asian Journal on Mediation. In 2011, Joel was awarded the Outstanding Educator Award which is the National University of Singapore’s highest teaching award.

George Lim was called to the Bar in Singapore in 1981, and has practised law for more than 40 years. He was appointed Senior Counsel by the Chief Justice in 2010, and was President of the Law Society of Singapore between 1998-1999. In January 2017, George was appointed Chairman of the SIMC.

George has mediated more than 700 disputes, and has extensive experience in mediating cross-cultural, cross-border disputes in Singapore, Thailand, Taiwan, Maldives, South Korea, Australia and Fiji. George has also conducted mediation training for judges and lawyers in Singapore, Thailand, Philippines, Malaysia, Dubai, Bahrain, Maldives, Hong Kong, South Korea, Japan and Fiji.

George is on the panel of arbitrators of the Singapore International Arbitration Centre (SIAC). He is the Dispute Resolution Counsellor of the National Electricity Market of Singapore, and manages the dispute management process of the energy market. Between 2009 – 2010, George served as the first chairman of the Asian Mediation Association. In 2013, he co-chaired a working group, appointed by Chief Justice Sundaresh Menon and the Ministry of Law, to make recommendations on developing Singapore into a centre for international commercial mediation.

George was Singapore’s mediation consultant to UNCITRAL Working Group II, which led to the adoption of the Singapore Convention on Mediation in 2019. In October 2019, he was appointed to the Roster of Panel Chairs of the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) on Dispute Settlement. In 2020, George was awarded the Public Service Star by the President of Singapore for his contributions to mediation.

In 2022, George was named by The International Who’s Who of Commercial Mediation as a global thought leader in mediation. He is the co-editor of Mediation in Singapore: A Practical Guide.

Chuan Wee Meng is the Chief Executive Officer at the SIMC.

He is an experienced lawyer of more than 30 years, working out of Beijing, Hong Kong, Sydney and Singapore. Prior to joining SIMC, he served as General Counsel of IBM Greater China and Nortel Networks Asia Pacific for about 20 years.

Wee Meng has advised senior leadership of MNCs as lead counsel on legal and regulatory issues arising out of doing business in Greater China, India, Japan, Korea, ASEAN, Australia and New Zealand. As an active board member of US-China JVs, he has managed a wide range of emerging market risks with leading international best practices.

Leveraging his deep regional experience, Wee Meng is currently leading SIMC to promote mediation to resolve complex, commercial cross-border disputes in the Asia Pacific region. He has trained Judges, Senior Lawyers and Businesses across Asia in international mediation trainings and workshops.

Wee Meng is an accredited mediator of the Singapore International Mediation Institute. He graduated with a law degree from the National University of Singapore and holds a Master of Laws from the University of Hong Kong. He is called to the Singapore Bar and Hong Kong’s Roll of Solicitors.
