Chuan Wee Meng, CEO of SIMC, explaining the use of the LML Protocol launched in 2023 to the audience of the 7th International Mediation Summit 2023, Xiamen.

On the 30th March, SIMC’s CEO Chuan Wee Meng was specially invited to present at the 7th International Mediation Summit 2023 held in Xiamen. Organised by the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade (CPPIT), the summit’s influence and success over the past 6 years attracted over 400 international businesses, government officals and legal professionals from China, Singapore, United States, United Kingdom, South Korea, and many more.

This year’s theme of “Challenges, Innovations, and Opportunities: Striving to Create a New Landscape for Diversified International Commerical Dispute Resolution” garnered attention on Mr Chuan as he spoke of the latest advancements in international mediation. The formation of the International Organisation for Mediation (IOMed) in Hong Kong and the Lit-Med-Lit Protocol jointly established by SIMC and Singapore International Commercial Court (SICC) demonstrated the global trend towards non-adversarial dispute resolution, showcasing the new and exciting opportunities to come.

Sharing on the Online Dispute Resolution (ODR) framework by APEC, Mr Chuan further explained how joint international collaborations can boost future RCEP developments and efficiency in cross border dispute resolutions. He also shared about SIMC collaborations with RCEP countries, such as China, Japan, South Korea, Indonesia, and many more. These collaborations provide a more comprehensive approach to resolve international disputes between parties of separate cultures and languages. He pointed out mediation has become increasingly popular and well-accepeted as an alternative dispute resolution, with more state parties eager to join the Singapore Convention on Mediation (SCM). Mr Chuan was delighted to shared that Uruguay has become the latest state party to ratify SCM.

Following a nearly three-year hiatus, during which all engagements with China were pivoted online, SIMC is grateful for the time and opportunity to be a part of this large-scale summit in China. It was refreshing to finally meet with partners face-to-face, and SIMC is excited about the many opportunities that lie ahead!
