Dear Friend of SIMC,

Q4 has been a very busy and productive quarter for Singapore International Mediation Centre (SIMC). We are capping 2022 with a record number of cases from various industries including exciting areas of development such as cryptocurrency disputes and investor-state disputes.

Just last month, SIMC and the Shenzhen Court of International Arbitration (SCIA) launched the SIMC-SCIA Med-Arb Protocol to allow the recording of any settlement agreement resulting from mediation at SIMC as an arbitral award of the SCIA. The SIMC-SCIA Protocol and MOU extension were among several new joint projects and MOUs signed at the 3rd Singapore-Shenzhen Smart City Initiative Joint Implementation Committee meeting on 25 November. This protocol would be especially useful for parties seeking enforcement in China and potentially under the New York Convention. Please contact SIMC should you require more information.
SIMC was represented by Board member Ms. Ng Chai Ngee, while SCIA was represented by its President,
Dr. Liu Xiaochun (both in the first row, third from left in their respective photos).

Also in November, SIMC's Chairman Mr. George Lim SC, and CEO Mr. Chuan Wee Meng attended several industry events in South Korea and Japan. We held our on 7 November which saw twenty senior practitioners, in-house counsel, and industry leaders joining the SIMC specialist mediator panel.
Two batches of Korea-trained SIMC Specialist Mediators, including partners and guests, came together during Seoul ADR Festival to celebrate the empanelment of the June 2022 cohort.
The SIMC Specialist Mediators, partners, and guests had a great time networking and sharing updates over the empanelment lunch.
We also visited our Korean partners and jointly organized two events during Seoul ADR Festival:
  • The Future of ADR Practitioners: Trends in Asia, ESG, Advocacy & Fee Models seminars, co-hosted with Peter & Kim.
  • Women's Interest Committee (WIC) "Women in Mediation 2022" Seminar organized by KCAB International
SIMC led a roleplay with WIC, co-hosted two seminars with our Korean partners, and engaged with senior partners of Korean law firms during our South Korea Trip.
To wrap up an eventful year, Mr. Lim, Mr. Chuan, and SIMC Vice-Chairman Mr. Lok Vi Ming SC attended the Japan International Mediation Center (JIMC)-Kyoto's 4th Anniversary mock mediation and lecture on 21 November 2022. This unique role-playing event showcased a distinctive feature of the : co-mediation. Besides visiting Japanese and International law firms to share the latest developments in international mediation, and reconnecting with SIMC’s Japan-based Specialist Mediators over lunch, they also met with young Japanese and Singaporean lawyers working in Tokyo.
SIMC presented a mock mediation with JIMC at the JIMC-Kyoto’s 4th Anniversary Seminar and engaged with Japanese & International law firms, and Japanese & Singaporean lawyers based in Tokyo.
