Dear friends of SIMC,
As Singapore ushers in the Year of the Dragon with drones flying in formation as swirling dragons over Marina Bay Sands, at SIMC we celebrate our 10th Anniversary this year.
We have highlighted 4 industries below and thank you for the many strong collaborations. We invite you to join and support us as we grow the use of mediation in each of them:
- BRI: SIMC and China Council for Promoting International Trade (CCPIT) signed MOU for the joint establishment of a panel of Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) Mediators. We will explore with CCPIT the use of mediation for BRI disputes.
- Maritime: SIMC and the Singapore Chamber of Maritime Arbitration (SCMA) established our first joint maritime mediators panel for the global maritime industry. We will work with the Singapore Maritime Foundation and SCMA in the maritime Industry.
- Aviation: SIMC and the Hague Court of Arbitration for Aviation (HCAA) signed a MOU this week at the Singapore Airshow to collaborate on Asia’s first specialized mediation framework for the aviation industry. We will work with the Association of Aerospace Industries (Singapore) and HCAA in the aviation industry.
- Insurance: SIMC and Singapore Insurance Institute are planning a joint event in May to introduce mediation as an appropriate process to resolve insurance and claim-related disputes.
Details are set out below. We have also worked with partners in South Korea, Japan, China, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, Costa Rica and look forward to the other upcoming engagements in the Calendar of Events below.
We are also grateful for the rise in mediation cases filed: 90 in 2023 compared to 77 in 2022, an increase of 17%. Thank you!
This Saturday, Chinese families will gather under a full moon to celebrate the Lantern Festival (元宵节), which marks the end of the Chinese New Year festivity. It is a time to renew and strengthen family bonds and for reconciliation by putting the past behind them. What a beautiful way to start a new year!
Wishing everyone peace and prosperity in 2024.
Yours sincerely,
Chuan Wee Meng
